A Meta-Analysis on the Effect Size of Physical Activity, Nutrition and Health Education-related Intervention for Sarcopenia in the Elderly

Kim Ae-Jung
Abstract
This study performed a comprehensive analysis of the variation in physical ability and muscle mass based on 41 research papers that have proven effectiveness for sarcopenia in the elderly on physical activity, nutrition, and health education over the past ten years. Search results using keywords such as ¡®sarcopenia¡¯ and ¡®elderly¡¯ and ¡®physical¡¯ and ¡®nutrition¡¯ and ¡®education¡¯ from databases including PubMed, RISS, and NAL. This collected data was then coded to compute and analyze effect size. The overall effect size was medium level (0.493) and in terms of the effectiveness of an intervention, a large effect size was found in functional improvement. The characteristics of the intervention provided a large effect size in cases within the study unit, physical activity, and nutrition. At the intervention group unit, the physical activity and health education or health education and nutrition showed a large effect size. The effect size was significant according to the number of subjects and the length of the research period. The significance of this study lies in the comprehensive analysis of interventions all across the physical activity, nutrition, and health education-related interventions. We hope the results of the integrated and objective analyses from this study will provide a foundation for the development of programs for the elderly with sarcopenia.
